Carmen Chamberlain

Carmen Chamberlain is investigating the chemistry and materials compatibility of uranium hexafluoride. Previously, as a graduate student researcher at the University of Notre Dame, she performed solid-state characterization of uranium(VI) materials relevant to the storage of used nuclear fuel. Dr. Chamberlain was a graduate research student intern at ORNL through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education. She holds a doctoral degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, with biochemistry emphasis, from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She received the Patrick and Jana Eilers Graduate Student Fellowship for Energy-Related Research in 2023 and the Michigan Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Fellowship in 2018 and 2019. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Association for Women in Science.

Kaitlyn Engle

Kaitlyn Engle is performing fundamental chemistry in support of the plutonium-238 supply program. Dr. Engle holds a doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry from Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Columbia University. Her previous experience includes radiochemistry, Schlenk line, single crystal X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry and glovebox work.

Past Seaborg Postdocs

Sara Gilson, ORNL R&D Associate Staff Member

Dr. Gilson was our first Seaborg postdoc. During her postdoc she worked on fundamental chemistry associated with the Pu-238 supply program. She is now a staff scientist at ORNL.
