LANL’s Ben Stein speaker for May Seaborg seminar

The Glenn T. Seaborg Institute at ORNL welcomes Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Ben Stein as May speaker in its Seaborg seminar series. Stein will present “Recent Spectroscopic Studies of Actinide Systems at LANL” from 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 14, in Weinberg Auditorium, Room I26 in Building 4500N, and on Zoom. Stein is the deputy group leader for LANL’s Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (C-PCS) group and established LANL’s Actinide Spectroscopy Laboratory, a multi-PI effort that consolidates a variety of ultrafast optical, time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance and microscopy capabilities. Stein has broad experience with the spectroscopy, magnetism and electronic structure of transition metal, lanthanide and actinide systems, including transuranic systems. He holds a doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of New Mexico, where he researched spectroscopic characterization of metalloenzymes (particularly molybdenum containing enzymes) and heterospin biradical systems for quantum information applications. He joined LANL as a Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellow under the mentorship of Stosh Kozimor, focusing his research on the spectroscopic characterization of actinium coordination compounds. He joined the C-PCS group as a staff scientist in 2018, focusing on spectroscopic studies of the actinides, and became group leader in 2022. During his visit to ORNL, Stein will tour facilities and meet with scientists to explore opportunities for collaboration. The Seaborg summer seminar series runs through August. Future speakers include Sara Gilson, 2-3 p.m. Thursday, June 4; Prof. Thomas Albrecht, 11a.m.-noon Wednesday, June 17; Kaitlyn Engle, 2-3 p.m. Thursday, July 9; and Carmen Chamberlain, 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
